About Artisan Urns
Artisan Urns was born from the loss of my father and the first urn I made to honor him.
I had been working with wood since high school, first as a job and then as something I simply couldn't stop doing. But when he passed, nothing I could buy felt like enough. So I went to my shop and made him a resting place with my own hands. That was 25 years ago, and I've been making urns ever since.
I've always been two people at once: part engineer, part artist. The engineer in me loves precision — the math behind a joint, the science of how wood moves and settles, the technical problem of making something that will last for generations. The artist in me cares about grain, color, shape, and how a piece feels in your hands. Making urns is where those two sides of me finally meet. Every piece is built on careful principles, but it's meant to be felt, not just admired.
I work with wood from all over the world, and some of my favorite pieces come from much closer to home — the mountains around my cabin, here in northern Colorado. Living among the aspen and pines, I'm reminded every day that wood carries its own history in its rings. It seems right that it should carry ours, too. I also use acrylic, and metal as deemed appropriate.
Each urn I make is handcrafted, one at a time, in Colorado. When a family chooses one, I want them to know it was made with the same care I put into the very first one I made for my dad — as a lasting, tangible way to honor someone they love.
